 Romania Minimize

From December 1947 until December 1989 a totalitarian communist dictatorship controlled Romania. The fall of communism brought freedom to Romania's impoverished people. Evangelical believers, oppressed and persecuted under communism, acted quickly to spread the gospel among Romania's villages and cities in the 1990s. It is recognized that Romania is one of the top five Christian "hot spots" in Europe today. There are more evangelical churches in Romania than the rest of the countries in Eastern Europe put together. In all of Europe, Romania has the third-largest number of evangelicals. Still, that percentage is just 2.5%, and there are still 21 cities and over 9,600 villages that do not have a group of believers meeting regularly. Most of Romania's 21.5 million people claim adherence to the Orthodox Church, which traces its roots to apostolic times. Most people speak Romanian, though there are significant Hungarian, Gypsy, Turk, and Tartar minorities. Romania joined the European Union in 2007 and is a member of NATO.

OC's Romania team has two primary aims: to train and mobilize leaders to work together to promote healthy church growth, and to mobilize Romanian churches to fulfill the Great Commission by sending cross-cultural missionaries. Some of our missionaries serve at Bucharest Christian Academy, a school for missionary children.

God has blessed the churches in Romania with freedom, and now they have an opportunity to take the good news of freedom in Christ to others.
