 Spain - Basque Minimize

The Basques are a unique people group spanning the borders of France and Spain. Within Spain the Basque region is an autonomous province, with a population of approximately 3 million, seeking self-determination and eventual independence. The Basques are an ancient and proud people who have maintained their unique language and culture for as long as they have existed. They are in an increasingly secular environment, whether in France or Spain, and though many practice a “cultural Catholicism,” if you ask their religious preference, most would respond “atheist.” There is not a single Basque-speaking Protestant church. There are only 50 - 100 known Basque evangelical believers. Their tightly knit social groups (quadrias) have helped them preserve their language and culture, but also have kept missionary efforts at bay. Only the beginnings of evangelistic and literature ministries have been made. This is one of Europe’s hidden Unreached People Groups.

In partnership with Impact Basque, OC is helping establish a team among the Basques. Arriving in January 2009, our team's primary ministry involves following up the 500 Basque students who have participated in IB's “Summer in the USA,” annual month-long program. This ministry exposes the students to Jesus Christ while living in loving Christian community, and seeks to encourage students to participate in discipleship communities.
